[NEWS] Training Life at JYP Entertainment

This is a wgjjang exclusive. Please do not post elsewhere.

Inside the courtroom trial of Bi and JYP Entertainment vs. Click Entertainment, JYPE Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Byeon SangBong revealed details about the education that JYPE trainees receive in their years there.

Min SunYe, Ahn SoHee, and SunMi received this JYPE training system for years, while Park YeEun and Kim YooBin later joined in. Wonderful fans always were allowed glimpses of their training through video clips on various shows, but only their singing and dancing were showcased at those times.

So what other types of education do these stars-in-training receive? Continue to find out!

“We make stars,” said JYPE Vice President Byeon in the Hawaii courtroom when asked what the company does.

Byeon stated that there were currently 30 students training under their entertainment company from all regions. Students are provided with funds to cover tuition and other expenses. For example, if there are trainees coming in from China, JYPE covers plane fare costs, visa issuance fees, living expenses, and the like.

JYPE holds auditions to pick those talented students not only in South Korea, but many other countries as well. In China, 100,000 people auditioned, but only 2 were selected. The audition process is a challenging one, but the demanding road to stardom does not end there.

Training at JYPE is not limited to only singing and dancing lessons. Byeon shared that they also undergo studies in foreign language(s), community service (focusing on handicapped and orphans), reading, and other special lectures that include proper dieting methods, vocal training, anti-smoking, and proper sex education. For the reading portion, they have a book club in which they read and discuss books they believe are good.

The training ends when all the teachers agree that a student is ready to debut, at which point the student is presented to JYPE President, Park Jin Young. On average, this process takes 3-5 years, but various with individuals.

JYPE expects that students who “graduate” from their training program to become stars. Not only stars who are good at singing and dancing, but also ones who have proper manners/etiquette, can speak confidently, and have humility.

Well, this training system certainly created five amazing stars if nothing else.

I hope this was interesting for you. I’ve always been curious as to what type of training Korean artists get besides singing and dancing.

I had several random thoughts while typing this up:

  • in the Hawaii courtroom – Man I wish was there … in the land of paradise… with Bi… his body is exquisite. Sorry, I’m a girl, and I can appreciate even though I’m not a fan.
  • Students are provided with funds to cover tuition and other expenses. – Dang. Wish my university did that. *dreams*
  • 100,000 people auditioned, but only 2 were selected – WHOA. O.O;;;;;
  • community service (focusing on handicapped and orphans) – According to my friend’s notes, they do this to make sure their trainees grow up with good characters. Which I guess means so they do not grow bigheads.
  • proper sex education – O.O It’s necessary, but that came out of nowhere in the list.
  • they have a book club – I think SoHee/SunMi mentioned that they liked certain books… for the life of me, I can’t remember the book titles or what these interviews were. It’s on the old Wgjjang Archived posts somewhere. I’ll find it… one day…
  • Not only stars who are good at singing and dancing, but also ones who have proper manners/etiquette, can speak confidently, and have humility. – This line fit the Wonder Girls perfectly. I’ve became a fan because of those traits. And their big hearts.

JYP training is like boarding school. But it better for them for future not just in time being. I think JYP used his previous artist as trial and error before made WG.

    # community service (focusing on handicapped and orphans) – god have few coomunity service activities. Since they also know as Korean national group. I remember one show god with MC Jaedong that they travel around the country to help poor people that have poor eyesight to recieve treatment.

    # they have a book club – not sure about god. the only books that i saw was car magazine for Joon n manhwa/manga for TaeWoo

    # Not only stars who are good at singing and dancing, but also ones who have proper manners/etiquette, can speak confidently, and have humility. – Yes, this is true. I can see how WG is humble in everything.

Wow, maddd props to JYPE =]
They look out for their trainees and expect the best of them in all aspects of entertainment and life. I have a newfound/revived respect for artists/trainees under JYP.

Interesting read, thanks for sharing. Also, I agree with you about the girls’ traits, it’s what made them so irresistible for me… 😉

  12. 12 mofutofu March 25, 2009 at 6:57 pm

lol no you don’t wish you were in hawaii… it’s hot hot hot now and people were swarming at the airport terminal. xD

  13. 13 wgjjang March 26, 2009 at 7:04 am

@Wickerman – that’s it! thanks 🙂 it was bothering me for awhile haha

@angelkamille – i probably didn’t have to put that info, but i thought it was only fair to my “bi”-fanatic friend to mention “bi”. you know who “bi” or “rain” is right? the korean singer? well, he recently was sued by a local Hawaii company for canceling his concert there and making them lose $1.5 million. so he had to go to hawaii to testify as well as JYPE representatives. he lost 😦 so now he has to pay millions of dollars in damages. poor rain 😦

@Langit Biru – ahh, a god fan. awesome! i have a friend who was/is crazy about them. she has all their albums and everything lol.

@mofutofu – haha, try korea in the summertime and then we’ll talk hot.

forgot to mention in my previous post:
WG made me respect entertainers when I learned all the hardship they went through and seriousness of the entertainment industry (in particular JYPE).

That’s why I love WG and they will always be on top of my list.

  16. 16 kellykim March 27, 2009 at 2:53 pm

    @Kari
ok honestly sm entertainments training process is similar too
and there’s a lot more competition

and i respect both SM and jyp entertainment.

i think that their training program is good. it creates and molds a more well rounded artist. unlike a certain other recording company with artists that always creates scandals. still pretty though to get through it though. these trainees has alot of patience and they all come out great so i m glad. i like how grounded all the jyp artists are.

  18. 18 Stacy April 12, 2009 at 1:36 am

wow, proper dieting methods? I would like to know this.

I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. However imagine
if you added some great visuals or video clips to give your posts more,
“pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and clips, this blog could undeniably be one of the most beneficial in its niche.

What time does training start if your a high school student

  30. 31 shocker June 22, 2016 at 8:40 am

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a
blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let
me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few men and women are speaking
intelligently about. Now i’m very happy I stumbled across this in my
hunt for something relating to this.
